Dear Sir

Allow me to thank you as I do from my heart for your very elegant presents, as well as for the obliging Letter which accompanied it. I have read the poems again & again with redoubled pleasure. They are full of genuine poetry, & present to my mind a more spirited & touching picture of the English peasantry than I have ever before met with.

If Rob^t Burns has earned the admiration of his countrymen, you are not less entitled to the gratitude of yours; for you have done them justice. Give me leave to congratulate you on your increasing reputation & to assure you with what real respect I remain, Dear Sir
