1845. Robert Southey to John Rickman [fragment], [c. 25 December 1810] *

My dear Rickman

Thank you for your packet. I cannot tell the Capitaneus either where I saw G. Carreri discredited, or vindicated, but this I know that for a long time he was generally suspected, & has now since had his veracity established. [1]  Would it be of any service to the C. to see the Ordenanzas de Marina para los Navios del Rey de las Islas Philipinas, que en Guerra y con Reales Permissos hacen viages al Reyno de la N. España. in otro destino del Real servicio. 1757 [2]

It contains two charts, one of the Port of Sisiran, en la Provincia de Camarines, a la parte septentrional de S. Bernadino, y al Oessud. de la Pta de Nte de la Isla de Catanduanes. The other of the Puerto de Cajayagan y Calamotan que comunmente Alaman Palapa. This is a late acquisition from a Catalogue thro the means of Wynn. I have also got the Compendio del Arte de Navigar del Licenciado Rodrigo Çamorano, Cosmografo & Piloto Mayor de su Magestad. 1588. [3]

[1] Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri (1651–1725), Italian traveller and adventurer. The authenticity of his Giro del Mondo (1699) was once questioned, but it is now thought to be genuine. Southey’s opinion was not shared by all of his contemporaries. See Quarterly Review, 3 (February 1810), 195, which noted that Gemelli performed a ‘voyage round the world … without stirring out of the city of Naples’. BACK
