Catherwood’s Gigantic Head from Copán, along with a number of his other illustrations, are the first systematic attempts at the realistic representation of Mexican antiquities. Catherwood’s drawings blend Enlightenment notions of faithful, scientific representations with nascent, Romantic-era visual technologies, particularly the camera lucida, which Catherwood used frequently.
