My dear Sir,

In answer to your kind letter from Devonshire, I wrote to you at Oxford. This letter must have reached that place before your arrival, on the earliest of your computations. I hope nothing has happened to prevent your reaching Oriel in safety;—if this scrawl should find you there, I need not add that I shall be extremely happy to receive a line from you at your leisure. You will have the goodness to excuse my anxiety.

Ever, my dear Sir, yours

affectionately

Wm. Gifford
