Smoke and Mirrors: Internalizing the Magic

It is the interiorizing aspect of the camera obscura/magic lantern show that I will examine in Brontë’s novel _Villette_. The isolated heroine Lucy Snowe can be seen as one of modernity’s first artificially isolated, privatized subjects, detaching the act of seeing from the physical body in order to decorporealize vision. This essay appears in _Gothic Technologies: Visuality in the Romantic Era _, a volume of _Romantic Circles Praxis Series_, prepared exclusively for Romantic Circles (, University of Maryland.
