In ages past, and Egypt's happier hour,
When arts and arms exalted her to power;
Vain of her strength, despising God's command,
With various plagues he smote this guilty land.
Say, what more heinous crime or dire offence
Could rouze God's anger, and his wrath incense,
Still further to inflict severer woes,
And curse with torments greater yet than those.
Th' infernal French! whose infamy and vice
Surpass blains, locusts, boils, and flies, and lice.
