Haunted Britain in the 1790s

Wright argues that the rise in popularity of the Gothic romance in the 1790s led to an obsession with its pernicious effects in the periodical press. In its turn, this critical obsession with the Gothic in the 1790s became as imitative and as manufactured as the novels that it sought to critique.
