Because of its strong local character and cultural significance, this work does not, at first, seem to have a direct connection with Romantic culture or aesthetics: the local Pahari style is evident in the use of bright floral patterns, the subject matter is drawn from Indian religious myth, and there are several elements that suggest Mughal influence. However, it is this remarkably mobile and productive interchange of artistic traditions among Indian regions that would later manifest itself in the rich hybridity of British and Indian artistic representations.
