Byron and Hobhouse sail on the Lisbon packet, Princess Elizabeth. Accompanying the pair are Byron's servants, his valet William Flecher, old Joe Murray, Robert Rushton, and Friese, a German servant whom Dr. Butler had recommended. |

The Princess Elizabeth arrives in Lisbon. |

Byron and Hobhouse watch the British troops review under General Crauford. They also visit the Monastery of Bela where none of the monks understand Latin. In the evening they dine with the other Englishmen at Barnewell's and visit the theatre. |

Hobhouse and Byron tour Cintra, visiting Montserrat--the Moorish palace where William Beckford had lived. |

Hobhouse and Byron tour the convent of Nossa Señiora da Peña. The two dine with Mr. Turner. |

Wishing to move on before the ship arrives, Byron and Hobhouse determine to travel by hourseback to Seville and Cadiz. They take a boat across the Tagus, then lodge in Aldea Gallega. Also in the Party are Robert Rushton and Sanguinetti, a Portuguese guide. |

Byron's party rides through forests to Montemenor. |

The party arrives at Elvas, a fortified town. |

The party travels through Badajoz, then to Albuena. |

Byron and Hobhouse travel through battle areas to Monasterio, center for two thousand troops. The party spends the night at the home of a courier. |

The party rides through the Sierra Morena range, then they take a stage to Seville. They lodge at the Calle de las Cruzes No. 19. |

The party remains in Seville. Byron watches the Maid of Saragoza parade on the Prado. |

After a visit from travel-writer Sir John Carr, the party departs for Cadiz. They travel through Alcala and spend the night in Utrera at the Golden Lion Inn. |

The party travels by horseback to Zeres, where they visit Mr. Gordon at his winery. By 5:15 p.m., the party arrives at the port of Puerta de Maria where they take a boat to Cadiz, landing at 7:30 p.m. Byron and Hobhouse lodge at Bailly's Hotel. |

In the morning Byron and Hobhouse meet Lord Jocelyn and Mr. Wellesley Pole at the Consul's. That evening, they return to Puerta Santa Maria for a bullfight. Returning to Cadiz at 9 p. m., the men attend a comedy, then visit what Marchand calls "a sort of 'Moulin Rouge'" (191). |

Lord Wellesley --Envoy Extraordinary--lands at Cadiz. That evening, Byron and Hobhouse see Henry Gally Knight and W. Pole while walking in the Almedea. |

Byron and Hobhouse dine with Admiral Purvis on the Atlas. That night the two visit the opera with Admiral Cordova's family. |

Contrary winds thwart Byron's plans to travel to Africa. Instead, he and Hobhouse travel with Sir William Drummond to Algeciras in the governor's barge. That evening, at Lady Westmorland's, they meet General Francisco de Castanos. |

Byron sends all his servants (save for Fletcher) home to England, then boards the Townshend Packet. to travel the Malta. |
