1809 July 2 Byron and Hobhouse sail on the Lisbon packet, Princess Elizabeth. Accompanying the pair are Byron's servants, his valet William Flecher, old Joe Murray, Robert Rushton, and Friese, a German servant whom Dr. Butler had recommended.
July 7 The Princess Elizabeth arrives in Lisbon.
July 10 Byron and Hobhouse watch the British troops review under General Crauford. They also visit the Monastery of Bela where none of the monks understand Latin. In the evening they dine with the other Englishmen at Barnewell's and visit the theatre.
July 11 Hobhouse and Byron tour Cintra, visiting Montserrat--the Moorish palace where William Beckford had lived.
July 12 Hobhouse and Byron tour the convent of Nossa Señiora da Peña. The two dine with Mr. Turner.
July 13 Hobhouse and Byron are back in Lisbon.
July 19 Byron and Hobhouse dine with J.W. Ward.
July 20 Wishing to move on before the ship arrives, Byron and Hobhouse determine to travel by hourseback to Seville and Cadiz. They take a boat across the Tagus, then lodge in Aldea Gallega. Also in the Party are Robert Rushton and Sanguinetti, a Portuguese guide.
July 21 Byron's party rides through forests to Montemenor.
July 22 The party arrives at Elvas, a fortified town.
July 23 The party travels through Badajoz, then to Albuena.
July 24 Byron and Hobhouse travel through battle areas to Monasterio, center for two thousand troops. The party spends the night at the home of a courier.
July 25 The party rides through the Sierra Morena range, then they take a stage to Seville. They lodge at the Calle de las Cruzes No. 19.
July 25-27 The party remains in Seville. Byron watches the Maid of Saragoza parade on the Prado.
July 28 After a visit from travel-writer Sir John Carr, the party departs for Cadiz. They travel through Alcala and spend the night in Utrera at the Golden Lion Inn.
July 29 The party travels by horseback to Zeres, where they visit Mr. Gordon at his winery. By 5:15 p.m., the party arrives at the port of Puerta de Maria where they take a boat to Cadiz, landing at 7:30 p.m. Byron and Hobhouse lodge at Bailly's Hotel.
July 30 In the morning Byron and Hobhouse meet Lord Jocelyn and Mr. Wellesley Pole at the Consul's. That evening, they return to Puerta Santa Maria for a bullfight. Returning to Cadiz at 9 p. m., the men attend a comedy, then visit what Marchand calls "a sort of 'Moulin Rouge'" (191).
August 1 Lord Wellesley --Envoy Extraordinary--lands at Cadiz. That evening, Byron and Hobhouse see Henry Gally Knight and W. Pole while walking in the Almedea.
August 2 Byron and Hobhouse dine with Admiral Purvis on the Atlas. That night the two visit the opera with Admiral Cordova's family.
August 3 Byron's party sails on the Hyperion frigate to Gibraltar.
August 4 At Gibraltar around 3 p. m., Byron and Hobhouse lodge at the Three Anchors.
August 4-16 Byron's party reunites in Gibraltar. Byron spends some time in the garrison library--where John Galt first sees Byron.
August 12 Contrary winds thwart Byron's plans to travel to Africa. Instead, he and Hobhouse travel with Sir William Drummond to Algeciras in the governor's barge. That evening, at Lady Westmorland's, they meet General Francisco de Castanos.
August 16-7 Byron sends all his servants (save for Fletcher) home to England, then boards the Townshend Packet. to travel the Malta.
August 27 The Townshend Packet sets out for Malta. John Galt is on board as well.
August 31, 2 p.m. The group arrives at Malta.
Sept. 1 In the morning Byron and Hobhouse visit the church of St. John, then dine with Sir Alexander Ball. The pair have difficulty finding rooms, but spend the night at the home of a merchant, Mr. Chabot.
Sept. 2 The Governor arranges for Byron and Hobhouse to take Dr. Moncrieff's house at No. 3 Strada di Forni. Byron and Hobhouse dine that afternoon with General Oakes.
Sept. 3 Byron and Hobhouse meet Spiridion Forresti at the home of Mr. Chabot.
Sept. 4 Forresti introduces Byron and Hobhouse to Mrs. Spencer Smith.
Sept. 9 Byron and Hobhouse call on Mrs. Commissioner Fraser and Mrs. Spencer Smith.
Sept. 9-19 Byron spends much of his time with Mrs. Spencer Smith, for whom he develops an attachment.
Sept. 18 Byron narrowly avoids a duel with Captain Cary.
Sept. 19 Byron and Hobhouse sail on the brig Spider for Greece and Albania.
Sept. 26 At Patras, Hobhouse and Byron disembark briefly to feel Greek soil under their feet.
Sept. 29, 11 a.m. Wearing their regimental uniforms, Byron and Hobhouse land at Prevesa. The Albanian governor shows them through Marchand "palace."
Sept. 30 With others, Byron and Hobhouse ride to the ruins of Nicopolis.
Oct. 1 Byron's party leaves for Janina in Epirus.
Oct. 3 The party sets out with ten horses and two soldiers as body guards.
Oct. 5 Byron's party arrives in Janina. The party's mood is dampened at the sight of a man's arm hanging from a tree.
Oct. 8 Guns fire throughout the city in celebration of a wedding.
Oct. 11 Byron's party leaves for Tepelene to visit Ali Pasha.
Oct. 12 Byron's party is at Zitsa.
Oct. 19 The party arrives at Tepelene. "I shall never forget the singular scene on entering Tepaleen[sic] at five in the afternoon, as the sun was going down"(letter to his mother Nov. 12).
Oct. 23 The party leaves Tepelene.
Oct. 26 The party rests comfortably in the monastary at Zitza, then travels to Janina.
Oct. 31 Byron begins Childe Harold. Hobhouse writes in his diary: "Byron is writing a long poem in the Spenserian stanza...." (1:212)
Nov. 3 Byron's party leaves Janina.
Nov. 5 They arrive on the Gulf of Arta.
Nov. 8 The party reaches Prevesa.
Nov. 13 The party leaves Prevesa.
Nov. 20 The party reaches Missolonghi.
Nov. 22 The party crosses the Gulf to Patras.
Dec. 4 The party starts for Athens.
Dec. 5 They reach Vostitza.
Dec. 9 Byron shoots an eagle while hunting woodcocks. The bird is only wounded and dies a few days later. Byron is strongly affected by the bird's suffering.
Dec. 14 The group crosses Gulf of Corinth to Salona. At Solona they sleep in rooms filled with onions.
Dec. 15 Byron sees Delphi, a dirty village, and is dissapointed.
Dec. 22 On horseback the party arrives in Thebes.
Dec. 24 The party arrives at Athens; lodges with widow Macri, mother of the "Maid of Athens."
Dec. 27 Byron and Hobhouse call on the governor of the town.
Dec. 28 The party travels to see the Temple of Theseus and the Columns of Olympian Zeus.

July 17 The party disembarks at Zea; Hobhouse returns to England.
July 21 Byron's party leaves for Vostitza.
Aug. 19 Byron returns to Athens to take up residence at the Capuchin convent.
Aug. 23 Byron writes Hobhouse to tell him how pleased he is with the living conditions of the convent.
September On a trip back to the monastery Byron finds himself in the midst of an execution of a girl he knew from the village. Brandishing his gun and offering bribes, Byron stops the killing and sends the girl to freedom.
Sept. 12 Byron becomes infatuated with Lady Hester.
September Byron leaves Athens for Morea.
October 2 Byron's young friend Nicolo becomes ill with a fever.
October 13 When Nicolo is able to travel again, the two return to Athens.
November 1 Henson's letter arrives detailing Byron's financial straits. Despite being his financial ruin, Byron continues to enjoy Athens's social life.
November 14 Byron writes Hodgson, describing a party with drunken, rowdy Turkish heads-of-state.
November 28 Byron decides to return to Sunium.
December 5 Byron goes spelunking.

January Despite his financial circumstances, Byron remains steadfast in his decision not to sell Newstead.
Mar. 19 Byron gives a dinner in honor of the Franks in Athens.
April 30 Byron boards the Hydra and leaves Athens.
May 15 Byron writes Hobhouse telling him that he was "in bad health and worse spirits, being afflicted in body with what Hostess Quickly in Henry V calls villainous "Quotidian Tertian."
May 22 Byron notes in journals his unhappiness with mankind.
June 2 Byron sails on the Volage.
June 17 They reach the harbor at Gibraltar.
July 2 Byron writes about his voyage.
