The novel by Mark Aldanov in question first appeared in Russian in France as Mogila voina (The Warrior's Grave), 1939. It was published in an English Translation by Nicholas Wreden in the fall of 1945 under the title For Thee the Best (Scribner). For Thee the Best was reviewed in the November 4, 1945, issue of The New York Herald Tribune Weekly Book Review by George Whicher. Wilson has in mind the publication's Special Christmas Number of December 2, 1945, where, under the rubric "Books I have Liked," various prominent people were asked to name three books they have enjoyed most during the past year. The response by Charles A. Beard read, "Three votes for one masterpiece—For The the Best, by Mark Aldanov." —E.Wilson and S. Karlinsky
