The letter in the left column, which is a copy of the original sent to George Canning, is in John Murray’s own hand. There is a second copy of this letter in the Murray archives, in a secretary’s hand. The secretary supplied commas in a liberal fashion and capitalized a number of nouns. The letter also appears in Samuel Smiles’s A Publisher and His Friends: Memoir of John Murray (1891) I.93. Smiles followed the secretary’s copy, for the most part, corrected the grammar in a few places, and removed the second paragraph indent. Variants between the two letters are noted in red and green lettering.
