My dear Madam

I must not send off the conclusion of a five weeks journal,

without once more thanking you for all your kindness to Bertha. She will bring home with her much improvement of every kind, as well as a large stock of delightful recollections. Her visit has extended to an unreasonable length of time, – but I hope that some convoy will be found for her & her sister in the course of February. We are beginning to be a little impatient of their long absence. The house does not seem like itself in winter evenings without them.

This journal described Southey’s trip to France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the Low Countries in May–August 1817.

enters upon a wider circuit, & thro a greater variety of scenes. I shall begin to transcribe it without delay, glad to have a motive for so doing in the hope that it may afford you some entertainment.
