I have just received your letter of Dec. 19 announcing that the Bristol Philosophical & Literary Society

Members of the Bristol Literary and Philosophical Institution (founded 1820) had just established a Philosophical and Literary Society, where local members might read papers to each other.

have been pleased to elect me as one of their Honorary Members. Honours of this kind must always be agreable to those who endeavour to deserve them: & this is peculiarly so to me as coming from my native city.
