Dr. Arnold Markley was a professor of English at the PSU Brandywine campus. He graduated from Guilford College with a bachelor's degree and obtained his master's degree in 19th-century British romantic and Victorian literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1996 he joined the Brandywine faculty where he taught courses on Gothic fiction, Victorian novels, Shakespeare, and Classical literature and mythology. His publications includearticles in professional journals, co-edited and edited editions of volumes on literature, and two books: "Stateliest Measures: Tennyson and the Literature of Greece and Rome" and "Conversion and Reform in the British Novels of the 1790s."
Dr. Markley was awarded the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in 2001 and was selected for the Brandywine Distinguished Teacher Award in 2007. He died in June 2011 from complications of leukemia.
