[33] Loving & Liking [Version B or "Loving and Liking. Irregular verses addressed to a child.]

[Page f.59r]

You may not love a roasted fowl
But you may love a screaming owl
Or even a spotted slimy toad
That crawls from his secure abode,
His mossy nook in your garden wall,5
When evening dews begin to fall
You may not love a dainty frog,
Snared by the Frenchman from his bog
He floats; When in a fricasse or Stew
He floats, or a delicate ragout.10
But you may love him in his pool
Where tho’ he ne’er was put to school,
He swims by perfect law of nature
A model for a human creature
